Information Desk Clerk [looking at my family]: now that's 2 adults and 3 youths right?
    ::youth = 6-18years old::

Canadian park ranger [pointing at me]: now is she under 16?

ahh and now the best for last, as always, from the mouth of a kid:

Peter: When I was younger, i thought Moses came in a helicopter!

  • Question for thought

Peter: If you were on a deserted island, would you rather have a knife or a sock?

    me: A knife!

    Grace: why?

me: Because it's a useful tool to have

Grace: I would pick the sock because you can use as a puppet to keep you company, you can put it on your foot to keep warm, and you can put a rock in the sock and it makes a weapon.

    me: ...

[I guess i got pwned on that one].

  • finally in canada

After traveling for almost a week and stopping every day to do some sight-seeing and a lot of driving, we finally arrived in Canada via a ferry.

In some ways, Canada sure seems a lot like America - the Starbucks, the Safeways and yes the language. There are also a lot of Asians here which I guess I shouldn't be surprised since it is western Canada. But the speed limit here is less and makes the drive a little more comfortable. There are also nice meadows to gaze at instead of the tree-less mountains that Southern California offers.

When I was younger I used to be a lot more excited about going to hotels, but I have to say - I'm not as excited. There's something nice about having the same bed to go to sleep in every night. Even little Peter and Grace have started to miss home as they start to get a bit homesick.

Tomorrow we tour the city of Vancouver! Not sure exactly what we'll be up to but that's quite okay. There's something very fitting about reading a book on contentment on this trip when the comforts of home are taken away. This makes me wonder if I'm really ready for long-term missions or even how much my heart would really be in it. Of course it'll be different since I will be calling a different place home, but after settling in California for so long - I find myself loving and accustomed to it more than I would like to admit. But whatever God has in mind for me in the future, it will be okay because the Helper has been sent and sealed to ensure that the no matter how the journey turnouts, the destination is sure and worth it.

  • SAT prep

No, I am not prepping for the SATs nor teaching. But this little vocab analogy does come to mind (anyone remember these? They were killers)

    flies:mosquitoes as Asians:_______

    a. Boba
    b. B-rated restaurants
    c. piano/violin/flute competitions
    d. SAT prep classes

and the answer is ::drum roll::

    C.  When in doubt, guess C (or so goes one of the myths of taking multiple choice tests).

Well of course the other ones may be true but C is the best answer. or not.

But after accompanying my sister to her violin competition at Long Beach, I have never seen so many Asian families in my life gathered together in one place. I wonder how the few brave white and black people who were there felt. It was so much fun to watch everyone snap pictures of their kids with the ribbons pinned to their nice clothes. Top 4 competitors in each pool gets a trophy. My sister has brought home a trophy each year - but that's also becuase each year her pool has had only 4 competitors (including her) or less. hahaha

At times like this, its funny to see how people feel so out of place when they're not hte dominant ethnicity. But as the body of Christ, this is something that ought not to be a barrier at all. And this was something that was neat about being at Uganda and the team that went there - we were all different nationalities and ethnicities, but we were united in Christ =)

At the end of the day, I'd much rather be at church listening to the Word of God preached, surrounded by people who aren't matching my skin color than be at any instrumental competition full of asians.

  • back at the farm

So i come back home to find that my dad has returned to his childhood days. This includes drying racks of meat in our backyard. (haha wonder what our neighbors think of that). and going about taking care of his vegetable garden with his "secret fertilizer" (now good friends, while I do know exactly what is in this secret fertilizer - i think its better i spare you all the details). But at least our food is "organic" ?

Meanwhile, last night when i woke up to go use the restroom, i open the door to find a furry little thing run across my feet! Turns out one of the long-lost hamsters was hanging around that room. Spent the next half hour catching little Angel (my sister's pet) and found that once i put it in the cage w/ Squeaky (guess who named this one) - they went about fighting each other. Told my siblings this morning and my sister proceeded to give the hamsters a talk on getting along and no fighting. Last i checked, they were working together running around in some ball getting lost in the kitchen.

And even as I'm typing this, my dad comes back hauling in a bag shouting "Chicken Manure!"

...maybe we'll raise our own chickens next year.
